MAR Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the MAR program?
- MAR is the new OEM program that enables Microsoft to work with large refurbishers to license genuine software on refurbished PCs.
- What operations systems are included in MAR?
- Window XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional Edition are available initially in English, French and Spanish. Additional languages are planned for 2008.
- Is there a COA? If so, what does the refurbisher do with it?
- Yes, MARs obtain specially designed COAs through established distribution processes. Each COA will be personalized with the EPC name. The COA will be affixed to the refurbished PC in a visible area.
- Is product activation required?
- Yes. End-customers will need to activate the software using the Product Key found on the COA.
- Is media supplied for these used computers?
- Yes. EPC supplies a Recovery Media pack with each PC. Recovery Media packs include a recovery media CD, EULA and outer wrap in a slim-line DVD case.
- When will Windows Vista be covered by the MAR program for used computers?
The MAR program is designed primarily for Windows XP to extend the life of established Window XP operating systems or to offer this benefit to organizations that do not have enterprise license agreements and/or cannot purchase more genuine Microsoft software licenses. Windows Vista is not similarly offered across the board because many refurbished computers, typically 3 to 4 years old, are not capable of running the latest software versions, such as Vista.
However, if a refurbished PC has the necessary technical specifications to run Windows Vista, you can upgrade from Windows XP to Vista or any future releases of the Windows operating system software – at an upgrade cost only.
- Is this the only licensing program for refurbished computers?
- No. A Community MAR program for charities, schools and other eligible community users is available around the world. This program allows refurbishers to install select Windows XP operating systems for eligible recipients.
- Who provides support?
- Web-based support is available from Microsoft free-of-charge. Additional support is available from Microsoft on a fee-per-incident support basis only.
