UK Study finds unwiped data on scrap hard drives

Sensitive patient information was found on an unwiped hard drive as part of a multinational study of 350 discarded hard drives, some purchased online.

According to the study, just over 37 percent of the drives still contained personal data, including the aforementioned patient information from a hospital in England, salary details, bank and credit account details, pornography, visa applications and online purchasing information.

The study, yet to be made available publically, was sponsored by BT (London) and Life Cycle Services (Ashford, England), with research done in partnership with the University of Glamorgan (Pontypridd, Wales), Edith Cowan University (Joondalup, West Australia) and Longwood University (Farmville, Virginia).

This helps illustrate why it makes sense to partner with a reputable electronics scrap processor. Contact EPC today to start handling your electronics scrap responsibly.
